applied arts magazine winner

Last year we shot a fun and technically challenging job for Sid Lee/Montreal and their client Pratt and Whitney. The trick was to create a snowstorm in May. Thanks to our proximity to the Rocky Mountains and a carefully placed leaf blower, it turned out to be not too difficult. We entered one of the outtakes into Applied Arts and lo and behold we are in the Photography Annual. To read and learn more about the behind the scenes of this shot, check our blog archive (spring time in antarctica) and stay tuned for more awards news.

everyone loves a cowboy

photo#photo_1721

On March 26 the Government of Alberta launched a new branding campaign. Alberta:  Freedom to Create.  Spirit to Achieve.

The campaign included a print ad that ran throughout the province. As well, a brand new website was produced to advertise Alberta and all that it has going for it. We submitted photos to the agency for the initial mock ups. They loved one of the photos so much they wanted to use it in the kick-off to the campaign.

The shot is from a personal series we did for Hasselblad Cameras. Hasselblad wanted some photos for the Hasselblad Masters worldwide calendar, so we thought, what a great opportunity to show off a little bit of Alberta to the world. We spent a day at a ranch in the foothills of the Rockies and met and photographed some wonderful people.

Here’s some of the other photos in the series in case you want to see them. It’s a good example of what we do best… go in to a new situation and make the people comfortable and natural.

Chad - Well, the guy is rugged and handsome, in a Chris Isaak sort of way. He was our first subject.

photo#photo_1512

Marvin - It’s all in the shirt.

photo#photo_1513

Simon, Samuel and Sakarias - Swedish cowboys in Texas? Luckily their English was much better than our Swedish.

photo#photo_1510

Mike - There were lots of bikers who stopped but the Christian Biker jacket appealed to us.

photo#photo_1514

Mike - Michele asked him to take off his shirt to see his tattoo. Probably better than me asking… looks like he could kill you. Easily.

Amand - The only woman with a dress that we saw the whole time. Pretty too.

photo#photo_1509

Jim - Great character face, suspenders and a straw hat. He wanted to make sure his hand could stay in his pocket where his gun was… we didn’t argue.

Corynne and Larry - Just two happy kids, plus they were willing to climb on the cars.

photo#photo_1519

Josetin and Par - We love it when people are willing to go the extra mile. Good sports and a great memento for their trip to Vegas to really get married.

photo#photo_1511

Pamela - She turned out to be a pretty fun grandma. Here playing showdown at noon.

photo#photo_1515

Kevin and Devin - Identical twins. Don’t need to say anymore than that - other than they had a really hard time standing still for us.

photo#photo_1517

Jim - Quit taking photos after this guy.  With Route 66 tattooed all over with the Cadillac Ranch highlighted on his back…..can’t beat it. What a great way to end!

Forget scenes of forests or the beaches of Hawaii, now you can now make your own customizable wallpaper of whatever you can dream up.  The challenge was to somehow get across that idea in a photo.  Brad and Kelsey from Taxi worked together with ABL to come up with these concepts. It turns out if you mix black latex paint and white oil paint they can be swirled together for hours without turning into a big lump of grey.

blackberry storm is finally out

photo#photo_80

The new BlackBerry storm was just announced and we can’t wait to get our hands on one (or two in our case).  Our client RIM asked us to do some photos of the new phone earlier this year.  Secrecy was key.  Non-disclosure forms were filled out and a limited number of people were allowed on set.  These visuals were a change from those in the past as these were all done in studio as opposed to location.  Of course, Anna Goodson Management handled the incredible task of organizing everything from models to delicious french croissants for breakfast.  Our hats off to the crew at AGM and to our friends at RIM who make it an enjoyable fun shoot… the kind we love.

bob is everyone’s uncle…

photo#photo_1443

We met Bob McInnis on a photoshoot for Todays Parent Magazine.  He works for Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids which is a great organization that provides lunches to school children in the Calgary area.  Sometimes as photographers we struggle with the whole advertising thing, pretty models, perfect worlds, etc.  It’s refreshing to meet someone who truly makes a difference in the world.  After listening to Bob speak with such passion it rubbed off on us. We volunteered our services if he ever needed it and sure enough he called us on it.  It’s a great charity and we hope we can do more in the future.  www.brownbaggingit.org

welcome…

I hate having my photo taken.” or “Having my photo taken is like going to the dentist.”

Hey, we’ve heard them all before and we’ve managed to charm each and every person we’ve ever photographed… well, except maybe two.  Regardless, we never understood how they could feel that way.  I mean going to the dentist is never fun, unless you are drugged.  But now we understand… for us writing blogs, bios or whatever, is worse than going to the dentist.

The right side of both of our brains cannot handle writing.  The question of course is why??  First off, we would like to blame our English class at photo school.  Dale blames his seventh grade teacher who never taught him the proper use of commas, or colons or run on sentences.  So what it boils down to is we don’t like talking about ourselves.   We are photographers without attitudes. We love taking photos and we love what we do.  So be patient with our writing… we are just hoping that we can share a little behind the scenes of some of the photoshoots we’ve been involved in.
